The MUTCD only permits purple signs for toll facilities that collect tolls by electronic tolling AND by registered toll road accounts. In other words, both conditions (electronic tolling and registration) MUST apply for a toll road to use a purple sign. The following table clarifies conditions where a purple sign may be used.
TOLL COLLECTION | PURPLE SIGN |
---|---|
Cash | NO |
Cash, Credit Card or Ticket | NO |
Toll payment only with a tag (or transponder) | YES |
Toll payment with a tag or cash | NO |
Toll payment with a tag, cash, credit card or ticket | NO |
Toll payment with a tag or license plate read | NO |
A purple sign may be used: at the entrance of a toll road or toll lane, in advance of a toll road or toll lane, at a toll collection point, or in advance of a toll collection point. In circumstances where toll lanes are separated by toll collection methods (e.g., cash lanes vs. electronic tolling) purple signs may be applied ONLY to those lanes that are dedicated to electronic toll collection by registered users.
